Cabarrus Creamery, one of Concord’s favorite ice cream shops, is getting ready to temporarily close its doors at 21 Union Street South, Suite #5009.

After serving the community for a century, the eatery will temporarily close starting on Sunday, Nov. 26, due to the ongoing development projects in downtown Concord, according to the company via Facebook. These city updates include new sidewalks, parking spaces, landscaping, decorative lighting, updated utilities, and space allotted for public art and outdoor restaurants. Despite the closure, the team did say they hope to reopen the ice cream shop in Spring 2024.

“It will incentivize the creation of outdoor cafes, adding life to the street and changing its perception, especially at night,” the Downtown Concord website says. “The increased foot traffic and street life will attract new restaurants/nightlife and retailers, and make reuse of now-vacant upper stories more attractive to office and residential uses. The new streetscape will also increase property values and redevelopment opportunities downtown.”

These development projects began between Market Street and Union Street South in February and are expected to be completed in mid-2024. When Cabarrus Creamery reopens next year, the 1950s-style shop will feature over 25 flavors of ice cream. Fans of the longstanding ice cream shop will have one more week to get their delicious ice cream before it closes for a few months. Cabarrus Creamery will post updates on the company’s Facebook.

“We are so thankful for the support we received this past weekend,” the company wrote on its Facebook. “We love our customers, and it was great to see our shop full of people! The sad reality is our business has been struggling due to the street closures and the construction all around us. We have come to the hard realization that we can not survive winter with the current conditions in Downtown Concord. Our hopes are to reopen in the Spring.”
