Cheba Hut is set to open a new location at 1825 Rozzelles Ferry Rd, according to a building permit application filed with the City of Charlotte this month.

Co-Franchisee Michael Doney, alongside partners Michael Hopkins and Tim Webster, is spearheading the project.

The permit describes the construction as a “Tenant Finish for Restaurant/Bar in Shell Building.” Doney and his partners have plans to establish at least three Cheba Hut locations in Charlotte, a process that began with an announcement in the summer of 2021.

“We were looking for a different food option with character,” Doney said in a 2021 interview with the Charlotte Observer. “It fits our style which is unique, funky, and eclectic,” Doney said in the decision to franchisee Cheba Hut. “It’s a pretty cool place to hang out.”

Cheba Hut, founded in 1998, is known for its cannabis-themed environment and homegrown recipes. The franchise has grown steadily over the past 25 years and now boasts over 54 locations across 15 states. According to its website, Cheba Hut prides itself on creating more than just a place to eat, fostering a loyal fan base through its unique concept and genuine service.

Despite requests for comment from What Now Charlotte, Doney did not immediately respond. Doney first began pursuit of the 1825 Rozzelles Ferry Rd address with a rezoning application submitted to the City in 2021.
