Huey Magoo’s Chicken Tenders, a national chicken chain specializing in chicken tenders, is preparing to open a new location in Spartanburg at 1621 John B. White Sr. Blvd.

Franchise owner HM Upstate, LLC appealed to the city’s planning commission last month to have the site rezoned from R-15, single-family residential, to B-1, a neighborhood shopping district, according to GoUpstate. The new Huey Magoo’s will sit next to a commercial strip home to Five Guys and Jersey Mikes and across from Camelot Center, where there’s a Starbucks, Popeyes, Cook Out, and McDonald’s.

“We’ve had the Papa Johns in Spartanburg since the mid-90s,” John Knapp, president of HM Upstate, LLC, tells GoUpstate. “We’re locally owned and operated company, and we were looking to bring something else. We had some friends who got involved with Huey Magoo’s, and we went down and tried it and liked it and decided to sign up and open some of our own.”

HM Upstate, LLC opened the first Huey Magoo’s in Greenville in 2022 on Wade Hampton Boulevard in Greenville. Now, the franchise owner plans to open the new site on a 2,600-square-foot space featuring a dine-in and drive-through service and additional patio seating. The new Huey Magoo’s is set to open as early as early 2025. When it opens, customers can expect various chicken options, grilled, fried, or sauced, and served as tender combo plates, sandwiches, wraps, and salads.

“Unlike some of the larger competitors, that use either frozen meat or kind of a split breast tender, these chicken tenders are made with the actual tenderloin from the chicken (with) no antibiotics, no hormones, so, it’s a little higher quality than some of the competitors,” Knapp tells GoUpstate.
