Manuel “Manolo” Betancur, the owner of Manolo’s Bakery, is expanding its operations this month to include an associated cafe. The Changebaker Place will open at 4405 Central Ave., Suite B, in a space that formerly belonged to a hair salon. The Charlotte Observer was first to report the news.

Betancur has been operating Manolo’s Latin Bakery since 1997. It serves items such as tres leches cakes, pies, flan and doughnuts.

The new cafe extension will serve Colombian espresso and coffee beverages, gelato and pastries and croissants.

The Changebaker Place is inspired by the documentary “The Changebaker” debuting this month. The documentary follows Betancur’s life, including his emigration from Colombia and his opening of the beloved bakery.
