A local burger spot is planning an expansion to a new location. Nick’s Old-Fashioned Hamburger House is constructing a new restaurant location in Welcome not far from their current spot along Old US Highway 52.

The new restaurant will be 5,600 square feet and respond to their growing need for additional space, co-owner Jeremy Haynes told What Now Charlotte.

“There was such a large demand to be able to do more if we had the space and we just kept reinvesting in the company,” Haynes said. “We really needed more space for customers to enjoy and for us to enjoy working in it, and that can sustain the revenue and growth we need.”

The new space will have a traditional diner atmosphere, featuring an open kitchen that is larger than their current one. They will also be adding about 20 seats inside, as well as counter seating and additional seating outdoors for 100.

Haynes said they are focusing on maintaining their identity — a local, community-focused burger joint — as they transition to the new space.

“We are trying to keep the old-school atmosphere a diner has but in a newer building,” Haynes said. “We are going to try our hardest to be who we are now, just in a better setup and space.”

They hope to open in the new space in January. In the meantime, the Haynes are hoping to connect further with the community through rolling out a food truck in the next few weeks.

Founder Ralph Brauser opened Nick’s in 2010 and the Haynes took over in 2020. The menu features a variety of burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches and salads. The Haynes have focused on maintaining a community-centric feel at the spot — something they plan to carry on and expand despite the move.

“We love doing this,” Haynes said. “It’s crazy to me that we get to do this for a living. We love the people and the community we’re in.”
