Chefs Jon and Amy Fortes have a new concept on the way to the area, with plans to open at 1325 N. Broome St. in Waxhaw. This will be their first expansion into the Waxhaw area after building up a presence in the Fort Mill and Rock Hill area with their existing four restaurants.

Jon told What Now Charlotte that customers can expect an emphasis on cocktails — the “sip” part of the concept — and barbecue — the “cinder” part of the concept. The Fortes plan to draw inspiration from their existing restaurants in their Flipside Restaurant Group: The Flipside Cafe, The Flipside Restaurant, Salmeri’s Italian Kitchen and FM Eatery.

“All of our menus have inspired this menu a little bit,” Jon said. “It’s going to be a bit of both sides — an upscale restaurant for date night, but also some sandwiches and small plates for your everyday diner.”

The menu will feature fresh local seafood and hormone-free proteins like beef, pork and lamb. There will also be BBQ items like smoked half chicken, ribs, brisket and pork, with to-go options available.

There will also be small plates and shareables like bacon-wrapped dates and shrimp and grits. Expect to see a weekend brunch option on the menu, as well.

The 3,700-square-foot space will seat 70 customers in the dining room and will feature a 12-seat bar.

The Fortes emphasize being part of and giving back to the community.

“We’re all about local,” Jon said. “We’re all about community.”

Sip & Cinder is slated to open Oct. 1.

“We love to go and eat in downtown Waxhaw. It’s a growing community. It’s similar to what Fort Mill and Rock Hill were like when we were first introduced to them 10-12 years ago,” Jon said. “We’re trying to listen to what people are looking for and to [offer something new].”
