After years of rumors and delays, Whataburger is officially getting ready to take over North Carolina with several locations planned.
Previously, What Now Charlotte reported on the Texas-based burger chain working on making its debut in the area with two locations in Charlotte, including sites near Allen at 12809 Albemarle Road and in the Closeburn-Glenkirk neighborhood at 5301 South Boulevard, plus a handful of upcoming sites coming to upstate South Carolina, including two in Spartanburg and another coming to Greenville and Mauldin. Now, it appears even more are in the works.
Late last year, Whataburger executives told The Post & Courier that Raleigh and Charlotte will be the first locations to open, likely in 2025. Since then, the company has submitted planning documents for the two previously mentioned restaurants in Charlotte, as well as two locations coming to Greensboro at 2700 Koury Boulevard and at 4409 W Wendover Avenue, as well as one in Fayetteville at 3900 Ramsey Street, according to The News & Observer. While opening dates for these potential locations have yet to be released, company representatives have confirmed that Fayetteville will not be the first location to open in the state.
While all of these plans are only based on planning documents, the company doesn’t appear to be slowing down regarding expanding throughout North Carolina. Recently, the company confirmed that they are officially working on new locations in Raleigh, Durham, and Cary, according to spokesperson Miranda Grubbs via The New & Observer. There are no additional details regarding the timeline of these openings, considering the company is in the very early stages of planning.
As Whataburger continues to plan its North Carolina takeover, it’s important to remember this company is not associated with What-A-Burger, a local burger joint founded by E.L. “Eb” Bost and C.W. Bost in 1956. While the company had over a dozen locations at one point, it now has only six locations in and around Charlotte, including Concord, Kannapolis, and Mooresville.
