Asian fusion restaurant Yama has temporarily closed its location in SouthPark at 720 Governor Morrison St. #E130. Owner Birdie Yang told What Now Charlotte that they are targeting a May reopening.

Yama has been at the location for 19 years and has plans for “renovating, refreshing, and re-imagining everything” to bring a better dining experience to their core customer base in the community, according to an announcement on their website. Yang said the goal is to modernize the space. Renderings on the restaurant’s Instagram page displays wood, neutral tones and a bar area.

“We can’t wait to welcome you back this May — brighter, better and more inspired than ever,” the website’s announcement states.

The brand also includes Yama Loso and Yama Waverly. Yang also owns Baku, which is slated to shutter in April along Sharon Road, and Sora.

Moving forward, Yang is looking to explore other concepts, perhaps expanding into additional cuisines.

“Yama is established enough where we might have another location and that’s it,” Yang said. “We’re in other concepts too, so we might grow out to different concepts.”
