According to a recent permit filing, a Mexican bakery, called La Clasica de Oaxaca Bakery, is coming to 2995 Morse Rd. The permit details alterations to be completed on an existing space and the scope of work is projected to cost $15,000.

What Now Columbus spoke with Sandra Cruz, with La Clasica de Oaxaca, who confirmed that the bakery will sell authentic Mexican breads and Oaxacan bread. Mexican breads can range from conchas, a type of sweet bread made in a shell-like pattern, to crusty rolls used for making sandwiches.

Traditional Oaxacan bread is made with sugar, egg yolks and anise seed, which imparts a unique, subtle licorice flavor. The finished bread has a soft, fluffy consistency similar to French brioche, with a slightly sweet taste. Although it is sold throughout the year, Oaxacan bread is known to be consumed at special occasions and during the festivities that take place during Day of the Dead, a holiday celebrated in Mexico on November 1 and 2.

It’s not clear when the bakery intends to open, and Cruz declined to comment on the estimated timeline for opening.
