Staff of Thurman Cafe are working to bring their business back following structural damages.

The popular German Village burger spot at 183 Thurman Avenue is closed for the time being, from recent announcements. The restaurant has been serving Central Ohio since 1942. Owner Mike Suclescy told What Now Columbus he is unsure when the reopening date will be right now.

On April 12, the fire started in the back of the building before a staff member noticed smoke. It was deemed to be an electrical issue, and from NBC4 the Columbus Division of Fire Lt. Nick Davis called the damage “significant.” The team at Thurman cafe recently posted an update about the fire on Facebook, thanking the community for the support.

“Thank you for all the love and support we’ve been seeing. We’re glad everyone is OK and thankful the electrical fire happened during the day so someone was around to catch it before it was even worse,” says the post.

Thurman Cafe sits next to German Village Coffee Shop, near the intersection of Jaeger Street. This corner is also home to South Village Grill and jony’s sushi. The restaurant has been at the same address since 1942, originally opened by Nick Suclescy.

One of their famous burgers is The Thurmanator, with two 12-ounce patties, bacon, cheddar, onions and mushrooms. Along with the over 30 burger options, the restaurant offers other sandwiches, loaded fries, onion rings, wings and pizza thins.

As of now, there is no word on new additions for the restaurant or the extent of renovations. More updates on The Thurman Cafe can be found on their Facebook page.
