McKinney diners, get ready for your next great taco obsession. Velvet Taco, a chain that takes an innovative approach to the titular dish, is opening a new location in the area later this year.

Born and bred in Dallas, the restaurant is planting its flag at 8565 W University Drive, Suite 150. Velvet Taco has not yet revealed an opening date for its new McKinney storefront, however VP of Marketing Brooke Perry tells What Now Dallas the eatery will be ready to serve guests in April.

Paperwork filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation shows that construction began on the project on May 30 of 2024 and was set to wrap in January of this year. The location will provide Velvet Taco with 2,939 square feet to serve up its signature cuisine.

Velvet Taco-which describes itself as “a temple to the liberated taco”-first began delighting diners in 2011. The chain’s distinctive fare has helped it spread to just under 50 locations located in 8 states.

Velvet Taco’s menu challenges the traditional perception of what a taco can be. Diners can look forward to sampling unique dishes like the spicy tikka chicken taco, the fried paneer taco, and the Korean fried rice bowl.

The over-21 crowd can also indulge in a selection of margaritas, sangrita, and beer.
