The city of Celina is set to get its very first bakery this summer.

Opening on the Square in downtown, Granny’s Sweeties Cakes & Confections is being brought to the city by pastry chef Mikala Everson. The forthcoming bakery is named after Everson’s grandmother, who got her to fall in love with baking.

“I am planning on opening in Celina because I love this town,” Everson told Check Out DFW in an interview. “…I know that Celina doesn’t have a bakery yet and I can’t wait to bring one.”

When it opens, Granny’s Sweeties will offer baked goods such as custom cakes, brownies, cookies, cake balls, and truffles. Breads that are baked fresh daily will also be available. And guests will be able to enjoy other eats such as grab and go salads and sandwiches, charcuterie boards, coffee, beer, and wine. The shop will include a space where special events and baking classes will be held.

And Everson is just the person to teach those. After training at the Culinary Institute of America, she worked as a pastry chef for Google in California, the Gaylord Opryland in Tennessee, and on National Geographic Cruise Lines. She was working for NatGeo when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, something that Everson says ended up being her “biggest blessing,” because now she’s opening up her very own bakery.

And what could be sweeter than that?
