What Now Denver recently reported on an opening for Duke’s Good Sandwiches heading for 2748 Welton Street. However, that’s only one of two concepts that will be managed there by husband-and-wife duo Dan and Michelle Sawyer, who will also open Scratch Family Bakery + Local Market on the other side of Duke’s.

While the sandwich shop will face out back and be inspired by walkups from around the country, the bakery and market will face Welton Street and offer home goods from Michelle including biscottis, scones, cinammon rolls, cookies and brownies. While she intends to have some staples, the menu will constantly change.

Part of that change will be thanks in part to a gluten free and vegan baker who will help keep the menu fresh.

The market side of things will also focus on Colorado-made goods like pickles, jams and honies.

Michelle, who worked at a children’s hospital for 28 years, had a lifetime dream of owning a bakery.

“I enjoyed being a pediatric nurse, I just felt like it was time for something new,” she said when she spoke to What Now Denver. “I just enjoy feeding other people. It was always just in the back of my head and I never thought it would happen. People told me all the time I should, but I thought it was just a dream. But now is the time.”

The Sawyers hope both of their storefronts will help people who may not necessarily know about the Five Points area come and discover what a good neighborhood it is.

As of now, both shops are set to open by the end of October 2021.
