Royal Oak locals have all seen the astronaut mural on an alley off South Main Street. With its iconic pink bar stools, black-and-white checkered tile floors, and cosmic-painted ceilings, Comet Burgers is a phenomenon. And it looks like the stars have aligned for this iconic burger joint as the owners recently signed a lease to open a second location in St. Clair Shores.

The business appears to have signed a lease for the space at 24101 Harper Ave. The space was previously occupied by a Checkers restaurant, which permanently closed in summer 2023. Leasing materials indicate Comet Burger’s tenancy began in January, though the restaurant hasn’t opened yet.

With its flagship location in Royal Oak, Comet Burger is owned and operated by Lon and Mike Lleshaj. The business posted on Facebook in February, stating “Big things are coming! Stay tuned for some big announcements!” The restaurant also revamped its menu to add more flavors while keeping the classics last December.

Once some basic work is done, the new St. Clair Shores location will occupy the vacant shell space. The business confirmed the upcoming location with What Now Detroit over the phone but refused to share an opening timeline or remodeling details. In January 2024, a new LLC called Comet Burger SCS was registered under Lleshaj’s name.
