A new soul food eatery, The Carter’s Family Owned Restaurant, is coming to Lansing Mall at the end of this month. The lease was signed by Lansing couple Eldred and Kameron Carter in October. The space was mostly turnkey.

Lansing foodies may know Carter as the two-time champion of the annual Michigan Chicken Wing Festival. And few would disagree that such success is solid proof that the couple is ready to open their own restaurant especially after past customers showed passion and desire to be able to access their food year-round.

“Because the Lansing Mall is getting its 2nd wind and we want to bring life and consumers back to the mall,” Carter said in an email.

The Carter’s will continue to carry the owners’ icon: delicious chicken wings. However, the highlight of the menu will focus on traditional soul food items, including rib tips, greens, mac and cheese, chicken, baked spaghetti, and cornbread, as well as innovative soul variations.

“We choose soul food for multiple reasons. Soul food embodies your passion [for] cooking and the consumer can taste it. Soul food also highlights your eye for flavoring and the main reasons are we love giving access to great food and our city is lacking a good consistent one,” Carter said. “My mother and her family are from Brookhaven, Mississippi. I was raised on soul food my whole life along with other cultural cuisines.”

For now, The Carter’s holds a one-year lease and will open in mid to late December. A specific date hasn’t been set at the moment. The couple plan to run the operation, with help from family. As growth follows, they plan to eventually hire additional staff.
