A favored pizza pop-up is setting up shop at a brick and mortar in Hazel Park this spring.
Amelia Street Pizza has announced their new shop is opening at 951 E Nine Mile Road. This is the first brick and mortar from chef James Rigato and owner Matt Arb. Rigato told What Now Detroit there is no opening date as they are early in the construction phase.
Arb is not a chef as he previously worked for Rocket Mortgage, but has a passion for making different styles of pizza. He initially announced the business on Jan. 20 of last year, saying in a post “right now I just like making pizzas. For myself, my friends, my family, the boys.” Since then, he has been specializing in thin-crust pizza.
For Arb, it is a special opportunity to bring Rigato into the project as he is a very experienced chef. Rigato is the chef and owner of Mabel Gray Kitchen in Hazel Park at 23825 John R Road. There, the menu is not set, with local farm products infused with dishes like roasted cauliflower, soups and steak frites.
Amelia’s signature pizza is the pecorino half moon, a pepperoni pie with shredded cheese drizzled on top. The new location will have a smaller menu, with cheese and pepperoni pizzas, a rotating special, and cheesebread on the side. The dough used is a 72-hour cold sourdough ferment.
The pizza shop will be at the corner of E Nine Mile Road and Cayuga Avenue, in the same plaza as Hazel Park Barbershop. Hungry Howie’s Pizza is right across the street.
