A multi-use building from an organization celebrating Latino culture has a few new additions coming soon.
Mexicantown Community Development Corporation (CDC) is working on new projects for the CDC Mercado at 2826 Bagley Street in Southwest Detroit. In the building there is a cafe coming next month, along with restaurant space that will be filled in the future, according to Executive Director at Mexicantown CDC Raymond Lozano.
The cafe will only serve coffee and other beverages once it opens. Currently, Mexicantown CDC is looking for a restaurateur to take over the 60-seat space. There is no word on who it will be or the concept.
“We are now working to make it the Southwest Detroit destination for art, business and culture,” Lozano told What Now Detroit.
Mexicantown CDC has been serving the community since 1989 through revitalization projects and development for Latino-owned businesses. In 2007, the company developed their Welcome Center at 2835 Bagley Street, along with an outdoor plaza. The Mercado is just across the street. Needless to say, this has been a project almost 20 years in the making.
The mercado joins many Mexican bars and restaurants including La Michoacana Tortilla Factory, Mexican Village Restaurant and Tamaleria Nuevo Leon. Going west across the Bagley Pedestrian Bridge, visitors are met with many more restaurants and eateries.
Lozano said during the 2008 recession, the CDC Mercado became dormant. The organization also ran into issues with running the building during the COVID pandemic. Over $17 million was initially invested into the project with contributions from locals.
