Lansing’s beloved cat cafe, Constellation, is working its way to a new location in Lansing’s Old Town. The new site, located at 426 E Maple St, is a vacant two-story building that will be split into a ground-floor cafe and a second-floor workspace for the organization.
Constellation Cat Cafe initially hoped to move to the new location by the end of October when its East Lansing cafe’s lease would have expired. However, an unexpected car wreck caused major damage to the side of the building and foundation as one of the vehicles ran into the new casa. In response to the incident, Constellation has renewed the current lease through the end of the year and now hopes to transition to the new space at the beginning of 2025.
“We are hopeful, but there’s just a lot of repair that needs to be done. Along with that, new permits and construction needs.” Kelsey Earle, Constellation Cat Cafe’s new executive directive, told What Now Detroit over the phone. “The City of Lansing is trying to expedite the permitting process for us, but it’s still going to take longer than anticipated.”
Once built, the new cafe will be similar to the current cafe in terms of ambiance, floor plan, and menu, serving flavored lattes, matcha drinks, juices, and milkshakes.
“We are keeping the same purple colors and the classic double door leading to the cat room. And we will continue to use the same menu, but depending on the customers coming to the new location, we may add some snacks and enhance our milkshake flavors down the road,” said Earle, adding they will also be adding a dedicated nursery for kitten adoption.
“Lansing’s kitten season hits so hard,” said Earle. “So the end goal is to have a space that will help our rescue partners to ease their burden.”
Serving the Lansing area, Constellation Cat Cafe is a coffee shop and an adoption facility where people can enjoy a good time with the 15-20 fur babies available for adoption before taking one home. Though not an in-take facility, the organization partners with local shelter partners, including Happy Feet Rescue and Saved by Zade.
