A new bar highlighting cold boozy goodies is coming to Detroit’s Midtown in the Cass Corridor. Dirty Shake, the latest project by the founders behind award-winning concepts Chartreuse Kitchen & Cocktails and Freya, is slated to open at 4642 Second Ave this November. Sandy Levine and Doug Hewitt are currently transforming the vacant red brick building on the corner of Forest at Second Avenue into a down-to-the-earth neighbourhood bar with indoor and outdoor seating accompanied by a large garage door window allowing for idle people watching.
“Dirty Shake is just a fun place to be that has affordable drinks and affordable food,” said Levine in a statement in a news release issued on Monday, September 30, according to the Eater. “We want to pay homage to that old-school Detroit bar where people could go three or more times a week — a place between work and home — where you get to know the people sitting at the bar with you.”
As for the menu, guests can expect a balanced mixture of nostalgic classics, frozen slushies, and reinterpreted versions of iconic Detroit cocktails, such as the Hummer milkshake, as well as a handful of non-alcoholic options. While the “shake” might be commonly misunderstood as referring to milkshakes, it actually refers to the process “when the contents of a cocktail — ice and all — are poured into a glass (rather than straining the beverage without the ice),” as stated in the release.
