Jack’s Custard Co. in downtown Brighton is officially Jackie’s Custard Co. under new ownership.
Andrea Cartier, a previous antique dealer, and Davide Beattie, who purchased the custard shop’s assets at 415 Mill Pond Lane, have renamed the business to honor Cartier’s late sister, Jackie Burke of Royal Oak. Burke died of cancer in 2001 at 39 years old. Jackie Burke did standup comedy at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle. She was also a mother, an artist, an actress, and a teacher. The street, Mill Pond Lane, and the natural park with the same name right around the corner resonated with Burke’s love for ponds.
For years, Jack’s Custard Co. was a community hang-out spot on the block. Now, under a new name and new ownership, the ice cream shop will carry most of the old menu items, including frozen custard, smoothies, avalanches, sundaes, and other desserts, but with some new ingredients. Additionally, the new Jackie’s is also running a 50% off quarts special on Wednesdays. In the future, the new owners may add tubes to the menu as well.
As for the architecture, Cartier and Beattie are in the middle of revamping the interiors. They will also commission an artist to create a large mural on the outside wall.
