A cafe and kitchen that has been around for over 10 years is shut down for the time being, but the owners are planning on reopening with a new look.

In a recent report from MLive, Juicy Kitchen at 1506 N Maple Road experienced a fire on Sept. 17 which caused damage to the kitchen. During the closure, renovations will be happening in the space. Co-Owner Kelby Ziola told What Now Detroit the team is hoping to open in a couple months.

The fire started from a freezer malfunction. No one in the kitchen was hurt, but there was some damage to the interior. According to the GoFundMe page about the fire, there was “extensive damage,” and everything had to be taken out of the cafe.

“Everyone is safe, and we will be posting updates about reopening when we have them!” Says the description on their website. The GoFundMe post said insulation equipment needs to be replaced, and the freezer has to be rebuilt.

The cafe has many vegetarian and vegan options, like the baked tempeh with sauteed sweet potatoes, kale and caramelized onions. Salads, sandwiches, burgers and soups are on the lunch menu, along with coffees and smoothies. Ziola said the menu will stay the same, but she is looking into new special options.

Juicy Kitchen is on the northwest side of Ann Arbor, in the same plaza as El Harissa Market North African restaurant. It started out as a catering and delivery service before opening at the physical address in 2013. Kelby and her husband Aaron took over the business from Susan Todoroff in 2017.

The team is still a ways away from the opening. There is a goal of $50,000 raised for repairs, and they are almost halfway to the goal.
