The city’s North Washington Street is catching the attention of new business owners.

Ypsilanti’s downtown continues to develop as Kula, a new small-scale restaurant and wine bar is on the way to 10 N Washington Street. The inside will have 12 seats, and is sharing the building with Beara Bakes. Owner Nina Shahin told What Now Detroit she and the team are hoping to open by the end of the summer.

Shahin is working on a menu of smaller plates with flavors of Eastern Italy, the Balkan countries and parts of North Africa. The dishes will accompany the wines, which will also be smaller and intentional selections.

“We will have a small, limited menu that’s constantly rotating,” Shahin said.

Cold Comfort Ice Cream, which debuted in 2024, is also operating at the space. This is a few storefronts down from Galy’s restaurant, which recently opened. It will join the developing area of Ypsilanti as Onesto Mediterranean restaurant and speakeasy is planned right across the street.

The news came from recent social media posts about new restaurants coming to the downtown Ypsilanti area. Along with Onesto, other concepts are planned for the city including Bella Vita Bistro at 200 W Michigan Avenue, High Score Social barcade at 14 W Michigan and an unnamed multi-level concert venue at 2 W Michigan.

Kula has not yet posted any updates about the space, but as it gets closer to the opening, more information can be found on their Instagram @kula.ypsi.
