A spot celebrating dishes from all along the West African Coast is in the works.
Chef Bangaly Kaba is opening Galy’s at 20 N Washington Street, a project that has been planned for four months. Kaba is already doing meal preps for the community through his company 360 Savor while preparing the restaurant. A spring 2026 opening date is likely.
Kaba grew up in Ypsilanti, and was given the nickname “Galy” by his friends. He has carried his passion for cooking through his career, and he later became a head chef at Mediterraneo in Ann Arbor. This is the first restaurant he will own.
The dishes are inspired by the food of Senegal, Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire. In these countries, French, Spanish and Portuguese influences are present. Kaba aspires to create dishes from these areas, while keeping the ingredients local.
“It’s about telling the story,” Kaba told What Now Detroit.
Galy’s will be replacing Crawdaddy’s Creole which closed earlier this year. The space is near Dreamland Theater and Plush Bakery, off of W Michigan Avenue.
Kaba first teased the location in October, showcasing the kitchen and dining areas. His current business offers a range of entrees including Catalan pasta, brown rice branzino, harvest chicken and shrimp pesto. He will incorporate some of his current dishes into the new location’s menu.
More information on the opening can be found on Kaba’s Facebook page.
