What started as a cafe on wheels concept is soon to be a new permanent cafe in downtown Detroit.
Nelly’s Cafe recently announced on social media a new cafe is opening soon. When speaking with owner Janel Norman on the phone, she told What Now Detroit the shop will be on Broadway Street. The planned menu items are coffees, pastries and smoothies.
“Locally sourced, minority woman-owned, community-focused,” says the description on their Facebook page.
In the past, Nelly’s Cafe has also served food like chicken wings, burgers and hot dogs. This was for a pop-up in the past. Right now, it doesn’t look like the new cafe will be serving food other than pastries.
Broadway Street is between Witherell Street and Gratiot Avenue. There are not many restaurants in this area, with the closest spots to Broadway Street being Buddy’s Pizza and Jose’s Tacos. This would be one of the few cafes in this area of downtown.
A menu and location address is expected to be released soon. Right now, Norman does not have an estimated date of opening.
