Reed’s Livery, a historic building at 248 Culver St in Saugatuck, was originally built in 1905. Now, two executives behind multiple Grand Rapids breweries are in the process of opening a new 3,700-square-foot brewery in the building. This news was originally seen in Crain’s Grand Rapids. The yet-to-be-named brewery is anticipated to open some time next March.

Industry veterans Brooks Twist and Wesley Noble, who previously owned and managed popular breweries Vivant Brewery and Spirits and Founders Brewing Co., respectively, are joining forces to create a brand new craft beer experience.

According to plans submitted to the Saugatuck Historic District Commission, the new brewery will have an outdoor biergarten with an outdoor bar, 28 table seats, and firepit tables. The dining room will have 63 seats total distributed between bench seating along the wall, bar seats, and regular table seating. The application also indicated extensive interior renovations to “incorporate brewing equipment and an updated dining environment,” along with minor exterior improvements while preserving the building’s historic architecture.

Twist told Crain’s that the brewery would stay open year-round, focusing on tourists during the summer peak season and shifting toward community gatherings during off-seasons.

“It’s important that (we’re) a member of the community and we become a community hangout place,” Twist told Crain’s. “We’re really looking forward to being a member of the small Saugatuck-Douglas community.”

The brewery will have a full kitchen and serve New Haven-style pizza, which is known for its “thin and very crispy crust.” Meanwhile, the bar will feature a beer menu with various IPAs, lagers, and some barrel aged offerings, different cocktails, and several mocktail options for non-drinkers.
