Our House is the newest Afro-soul restaurant coming to Detroit this year.
According to recent leasing documents, a new restaurant called Our House is coming to 8001 Kercheval Avenue. This will be located in West Village. It will feature West African cuisine and is to open in the fall.
Owner Cecil Johnson moved back to Detroit from New York after being laid off from Meta in 2022. His goal was to invest in the city that raised him and provide a unique dining experience inspired by his time living in New York City.
“It’s an elevated small bistro serving Afro-soul plates,” Johnson told What Now Detroit. “Afro-soul commemorates dishes across the African diaspora.”
Our House recently had their pop-up event on June 14 at Two Birds, 8130 Kercheval Avenue. This was an event to promote the business and had food that will be at the new restaurant as well as cocktails. Dishes served included fried chicken skewer, mac & cheese and candied yams, as well as beef suya, jerk shrimp and jollof rice.
Right now, the business is listed as coming soon. Johnson has been networking with the community, and given the success of his recent pop-up, he has high hopes for his permanent location.
