Ice cream and burgers are on the menu at a new spot coming to East Lansing this winter.
The second RJ’s Burger & Ice Cream Co. location will be opening at 1399 E Grand River Avenue. It marks the first major expansion from the burger and ice cream shop which has gained a following in Jackson. According to owner Robert Wilkie, the shop is set to debut on Dec. 9.
RJ’s is a family owned restaurant with their current Jackson location at 135 E Michigan Avenue. Wilkie and his wife Yvette have been looking at expanding to Lansing for a while as they see many customers from this area. He said he thought it would be a “great opportunity” to have a location more central to the state.
RJ’s has seen famous faces come through the doors such as Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and NBA player Ray Weathers. On the wall inside of RJ’s, there are pictures of all the famous visitors that have come to the shop. It has gained recognition at the state level, being voted one of Michigan’s best small businesses by Michigan SBDC.
Wilkie said the menu for the new location will be virtually the same as Jackson’s. There will be a range of burgers, turkey burgers and hoagies. On the ice cream side, the shop sells shakes and malts, sundaes, and scoops like banana pudding and cool mint cookie. There may also be future burgers themed to Michigan State like a “Spartan burger.”
The shop is being built to the left of Grand Traverse Pie Company. This is located in the Brookfield Plaza.
