Following the success of a Yemeni cafe in Ann Arbor, the owner is opening a second location closer to Detroit.
It was revealed by the Discover Hamtramck Instagram page that a Bun Chai location is coming to the city. According to owner Ghazi Alsafari, it will be at 11815 Joseph Campau Avenue. Alsafari told What Now Detroit right now he is hoping to open by the end of the year.
The first Bun Chai location opened in Ann Arbor at 306 S State Street last month. It provides a space downtown for visitors to study and socialize, with Yemeni teas, espressos, cappuccinos and other hot drinks. The spot also has a food menu, including pastries like croissants, cakes and tarts.
The second location is on the north side of Hamtramck, across the street from Plav Post Ten. Bun Chai is not yet listed at the address as it is early in the opening process.
The Michigan Daily reported on the Yemeni cafe coming to Ann Arbor last month. The cafe opened on Labor Day, and according to Alsafari the coffee is imported directly from Yemen. It has already attracted a crowd of studiers and remote workers.
Yemeni coffee shops and cafes have grown in popularity in recent years, with spots like Qahwa Express, Qamaria Yemeni Coffee and Awafi Cafe being close by. Hamtramck and Dearborn have the largest Yemeni population outside of Yemen with over 30,000 people combined, according to a report from Great Lakes Now.
There is no social media or website set up for the cafe yet. More information will be released in the coming weeks.
