Supino Pizzeria is heading to the suburbs, becoming the first of its kind in Oakland County.
The popular pizza shop is set to open in Beverly Hills at the Market Fresh Shopping Plaza at Southfield and 13 Mile Road.
Owner Dave Mancini told What Now Detroit the expansion came at the encouragement of his father-in-law, Johnny Karma, who owns Fresh Market. When a space opened in the plaza, Karma suggested Mancini take the leap. Once Mancini’s team got on board, the decision was made.
That team includes Chef Mike Mazzola and Stephanie Schult. Mazzola was brought on to help run the second location—marking the first time in 12 years that Mancini has let someone else take charge of his kitchen. Mazzola brings prior pizzeria experience and is a skilled pasta maker. Schult, who began as the front-of-house general manager, now serves as director of operations.
Mancini said he’s excited to give his team the chance to grow and shape the new spot in their own way.
“I want to keep them engaged,” Mancini said. “I want to keep them looking to the future.”
The new Oakland County location will seat about 80 people and feature a full bar, and Mancini prides himself on running a restaurant that welcomes everyone.
“If somebody has a special occasion all the way down to a high school student from the local high school that wants a slice of pizza and a coke at the bar, they can do that too.”
The menu will still highlight Supino’s signature pizza, but the offerings will expand to include fish and other proteins.
Known for its East Coast-style thin crust, Supino’s pizza offers a sharp contrast to the thick, rectangular Detroit-style pies. Mancini said he wanted to bring something different to the region and fill that gap.
While he’s looking forward to expanding the menu with his team, Mancini is just as excited about another passion—wine.
“Nothing makes more sense with pizza than a glass of wine,” he said. “It’s been a lot of fun learning about Italian wine, the geography and regions.”
Supino serves only Italian wines and hopes to pour more by the glass and bottle at the new location, introducing Oakland County diners to Italian grape varieties.
Though there’s no official opening date yet, Mancini is aiming for February or March of next year.
In the meantime, Supino’s other two locations will keep the dough rolling—one at 2457 Russell in Eastern Market, the other at 6519 Woodward in New Center.
