The owner of Bangkok 96 is bringing a new sushi experience to Detroit Shipping Company.

Sushi Lounge will be the newest restaurant to be added to the Detroit Shipping Company food and beer hall at 474 Peterboro Street. The restaurant is going to be a new concept offering 100% gluten-free sushi options. According to owner and chef Genevieve Vang, the space will be opening on Sept. 3.

Vang is a James Beard chef and has been a chef for most of her life, gaining experience in California in sushi restaurants. She opened Bangkok 96 in Dearborn in 1996, fittingly. This has been a fast-casual Thai restaurant that has seen success in the almost 30 years it has been open, and she now has a Bangkok 96 location at the food hall.

“It’s important to tell this story,” Vang told What Now Detroit.

For Sushi Lounge, Vang is bringing bite-sized sushi options, along with gluten free. She will serve flavors like tuna fish, yellow tail and salmon. There is also an emphasis on sustainability with the ingredients she will be using.

“We’re just going to make it a little bit different,” Vang said.

Along with Bangkok 96, Detroit Shipping Company is currently home to six different restaurants in Midtown, including Momo Cha Nepalese Dumplings, Motor Burger, Halal Street and Taquitos AF. The space on Peterboro used to be ShipYard Detroit, and it was initially announced in August 2015. The area is now a two-story beer garden and food truck hall.
