The space for the Ypsilanti bar that has recently closed is being kept alive this year.
The owners of The Wurst Bar at 705 W Cross Street have taken to social media to announce the closure as of Aug. 25. This is to make way for a new unnamed concept under new ownership. According to the new owner Vincent Ankawi, construction is just starting for the project.
“While we’re sad to say goodbye to The Wurst Bar, we’re excited to share that something new is brewing,” says the Instagram post. The initial announcement was on Aug. 13.
Ankawi told What Now Detroit the new concept will be serving food along with drinks. This will be different from the Wurst Bar menu which had of course wurst, burgers, fries, scotch eggs and lobster rolls. There is not an official menu out, but it will be “bar food” served.
Wurst Bar was owned by Jesse Kranyak and had been in the community since 2012 and was a destination for Eastern Michigan University students due to its proximity to campus. It took the place of Theo’s Bar which had been around since 1980. The space is next to Basil Babe Thai restaurant.
Plans for the new downtown Ypsilanti bar have not been revealed yet, but Ankawi said more information will be released in a week-to-ten days.
