New Hope Housing Berry Starts Application Process
New Hope Housing Berry opened doors to Northside families and residents in March 2025. The application process opened in May of 2025. Eligible families earning 60% or less of the Area Median Income (AMI) can apply immediately on a rolling basis. The leasing office at 8855 McGallion Street gives guided tours of fully furnished model units, making the process smooth for future residents.
Units at Berry present accommodations that range from cozy one-bedroom apartments for singles or couples to spacious three-bedroom units made for growing families. Each modern-style unit is equipped with full kitchens using energy-efficient appliances, in-unit washers, dryers, and open living plans. These features ensure convenience and help minimize monthly utility costs.
Upcoming Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Friday, May 16, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at the Berry site. New Hope Housing leaders, Houston Housing Authority representatives, local guests, and new residents will attend. They will tour apartments and preview the complete amenity package.
Meeting Northside Community Housing Needs
Houston’s Northside has lacked safe, decent, and affordable apartments for low-to-moderate-income families. New Hope Housing Berry addresses this need with 180 dedicated apartments.
This benefits stable neighborhoods in the long run. By locating Berry close to community resources, developers also aim to promote economic mobility and reduce housing insecurity for hundreds of people.
Features and Community Amenities of Berry Development
Berry combines indoor comfort and outdoor recreation. It caters to individual and family needs in one complete living environment.
Family-Oriented Amenities at Berry
Residents can enjoy a children’s splash pad, active park spaces, and shaded outdoor seating areas for family gatherings. A dog park allows pets to exercise and socialize while their owners connect with neighbors. An on-site fitness center enables adults to remain fit without having to drive outside of the community.
Support Services for Berry Residents
Across the street, residents have access to a community store offering affordable household essentials. Adjacent to it is a food pantry that provides groceries and nutrition help to those facing food insecurity. Nearby job training programs enable residents to learn new skills, paving the way for financial stability.
Houston Housing Authority’s Support
The Houston Housing Authority (HHA) supported Berry’s development through financing and management assistance. HHA CEO Jamie Bryant stated that Berry “builds on that momentum, strengthens the neighborhood, and ensures families have access to the resources they need to thrive.” This collaboration combines affordable housing and wraparound services to yield long-term success.
Strategic Collaboration Drives Housing Initiatives
Berry was the result of collaboration among multiple groups: New Hope Housing led the project; Garcia + Associates Architects and GSMA Architects designed it; and Camden Builders managed construction. Interim financing came from Amegy Bank and Comerica Bank, and permanent financing came from Amegy Bank. National Equity Fund acted as the LIHTC syndicator. The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs provided equity in the form of Low-Income Housing Tax Credits.
With applications open and apartments now welcoming, New Hope Housing Berry is set to provide stable, affordable housing and essential services to the families of Houston’s Northside. This joint effort of community groups, banks, and local government reflects a shared vision: stronger, more resilient neighborhoods.
