A new dining experience is on its way to West Houston as Kirkwood, the latest concept from Mac Haik Restaurant Group (MHRG), prepares to open its doors this fall. Soon to be nestled on the ground floor of Energy Tower II at 11720 Katy Freeway, the restaurant promises an elevated but approachable atmosphere for business lunches, after-work cocktails, and intimate dinners alike.
Initially conceived as an amenity for tenants of the Energy Plaza Houston campus, Kirkwood has evolved into a full-scale restaurant that reflects the long-standing ties between the Haik family and the Energy Corridor community. The name itself pays homage to Kirkwood Drive, one of the area’s original throughways and a symbol of reinvestment in the district’s continued growth.
“Kirkwood is about creating a sense of place—one that’s rooted in warmth, character, and a strong connection to the community,” said Alec Poynter, Haik’s grandson and a vice president at Mac Haik Enterprises. “Everything from the menu to the materials was chosen with intention, and every space tells a story.”
Designed by Gin Braverman of Gin Design Group, the 5,500-square-foot space includes seating for 154, a 16-seat private dining room named the Francis Room, and a 72-seat sunroom featuring a curved, double-sided fireplace. Layered textures, dark woods, copper finishes, and a glowing tribute to the Astrodome create an ambiance that’s both classic and contemporary.
The personality of Mac Haik himself—known for his ventures in auto dealerships and real estate—echoes subtly throughout. From an automotive-inspired wraparound bar to a lounge named after his wife Sunny, the space is filled with personal touches that elevate the story without overshadowing the guest experience.
Leading the culinary program is Stephen Chiang, whose background in Michelin-starred New York kitchens informs a menu built on refined American staples. Expect steak frites, fresh seafood, crisp salads, and indulgent desserts, alongside a curated cocktail list with a spotlight on handcrafted Old Fashioneds. Daily operations will be overseen by Haleigh Frey, formerly of Berg Hospitality Group, bringing top-tier service and hospitality into focus.
Kirkwood will open in Fall 2025 at Energy Tower II, part of the larger Energy Plaza campus undergoing a major transformation to enhance tenant experiences—from reimagined interiors to improved outdoor spaces. The restaurant will serve as both a neighborhood destination and a reflection of MHE’s ongoing investment in Houston’s future.
