Lupe Tortilla, a notable Tex-Mex restaurant chain, has a rich history that adds depth to its upcoming expansion with a location at S.H. 146 and S.H. 96 in Kemah, TX, according to a a permit filed with the state.

Founded in 1983 by Stan and Audrey Holt, the original Lupe Tortilla began in a 40-year-old farmhouse in the Houston area. This humble beginning in the Addicks community was marked by a 45-seat restaurant, which quickly garnered a strong following thanks to its unique and fresh Tex-Mex menu, highlighted by the brand’s signature fajita recipe crafted by the Holts.

The family-run business initially operated this single location until 1997. This year marked a significant turning point for the company, as the Holt’s sons, Judson and Peter Holt, joined the business following their graduation from the Culinary Institute of America. This addition led to the opening of two more locations, signaling the start of Lupe Tortilla’s expansion.

Lupe Tortilla’s approach to food is characterized by a commitment to quality and authenticity. Each tortilla is made from scratch, hand-rolled, and individually pressed, and every lime used in their dishes is squeezed by hand. This dedication to crafting authentic Mexican food has been a cornerstone of the brand’s philosophy and has contributed significantly to its growth. Under the leadership of Judson and Peter Holt, Lupe Tortilla has expanded to more than 20 locations across Texas, each echoing the commitment to quality and the unique style that began in the small farmhouse in Addicks.

The new location represents a continuation of this legacy. It is scheduled for construction in April 2024, according to the permit. This site will be a testament to the brand’s enduring commitment to bringing quality Tex-Mex cuisine to a wider audience. While no official statement from a company representative was available at the time of publishing, the new establishment is poised to enrich the culinary landscape of Kemah with Lupe Tortilla’s well-established flavors and traditions.
