The Raven Grill is preparing to shut down on March 29 after serving diners in Houston for nearly three decades. The owners shared that Raven’s sister concept, Picnic, will remain open to serve coffee and deli items.
The Raven Grill to Close After 28 Years in Houston
The Raven Grill in the Boulevard Oaks neighborhood is centered around fresh, regional cuisine. The restaurant, owned by Sara and Rob Cromie, is known for its wood-fired Southwestern fare.
On Tuesday, the owners announced the permanent closure of the restaurant on social media. The closure follows the landlord’s decision not to renew the restaurant’s lease. Sara and Rob appreciated the support and friendship over the last 28 years that helped sustain the restaurant in a competitive space.
The post also noted that another concept by the owners, Picnic, will continue to serve box lunches to customers. Patrons can stop by 1928 Bissonnet, Houston, for coffee, cookies, salads, sandwiches, and other quick snacks.

Legacy of the Raven Grill and Community Reaction

Since 1998, The Raven Grill has been a staple of Houston’s dining scene. Its menu includes pecan-crusted chicken, steaks, sandwiches, and homemade dishes cooked on a wood-burning grill. Mesquite-grilled meat and home-cooked meals have long been favorites among diners.
The menu also features desserts, prepared next door at Picnic, including crème brûlée, carrot cake, peanut butter pie, and a warm fudge brownie served à la mode.
Customers have shared emotional reactions to the closure on social media. Many described the restaurant as their gathering spot. As the restaurant was near Rice University, many former students recalled dining at The Raven Grill.
A user commented, “This hurts my heart. I will be there on Friday to celebrate my 23rd anniversary with my husband. I worked with you all in high school in my teens. The neighborhood, as well as Houston, won’t be the same without you. Sending you all so much love.”
As the dining industry in the city is evolving, the closure highlights challenges for long-standing establishments. Patrons can revisit the local favorite in the final days of service.
