Recess is gearing up to provide the first-of-its-kind family-friendly bar and eatery. According to Culture Map, the unique offering is expected to open at 1500 Waugh Dr. in early 2026.
Recess will occupy 12,675 square feet across two floors of a former Wells Fargo property. At the helm of this adventure is Recess Ventures and Hospitality consultant Scott Sulma of May I Speak Hospitality.
What Now Houston reached out to Recess Ventures and Sulma for comment on the new eatery and playground to come to Houston, but did not hear back by the time of publication.
What’s clear is that the new venue is geared towards striking a balance between enjoying adult time while raising young children by taking out the stress of family outings. According to its website, Recess will offer a full-service bistro and bar on the second floor, while the first floor will be dedicated to a supervised play area created in collaboration with Houston fabricator, Rootlab.
The Recess website further details that the play area is designed for age-appropriate, potty-trained children to play inside a supervised area, while younger children who are not potty-trained can play in a parent-supervised area. But don’t fret, parents, there will also be staff-controlled gates and wristbands to track each child.
While details about the menu are still being etched out, you can rest assured knowing that health is top of mind, and that’s where Sulma comes in. The hospitality vet worked as the general manager of Tony’s and as the area director for Baltimore-based Atlas Restaurant Group’s Houston operations, which offer Loch Bar, Azumi, and Marmo.
