Edo Sushi & Hibachi, a brand new Asian-influenced restaurant, hopes to open a new location in Gainesville at 6419 W. Newberry Road, Site #A0003.

The restaurant hopes to be the newest tenant in The Oaks Mall shopping center. Owner Xinsheng Xie recently submitted documents to city officials to open Edo Sushi & Hibachi, but plans are still being reviewed. There is no exact opening date. If approved, the restaurant will join several other eateries in the shopping center, including Asian Chao, BJ’s Restaurant & Brewery, Bubbles & Bites, Buffalo Wild Wings, Maki of Japan, and more. Xie previously opened Natsu Omakase in Orlando.

There is a concept called Edo Sushi & Steakhouse in Ocala, but it is unclear whether or not it is related to this upcoming eatery. The new Edo Sushi & Hibachi will feature a variety of sushi rolls and a high-end hibachi experience, with plenty of steak, seafood, and more. While this restaurant will have to compete with some well-respected Asian restaurants, neither offers a real hibachi experience.

Besides having the opportunity to bring hibachi and a new sushi experience to the shopping center, the restaurant won’t have any competition outside of the mall. The area right off Interstate 75 has a handful of Asian restaurants, including Yamato Japanese Restaurant and Ocean Buffet, neither of which offer hibachi. When the restaurant opens, once approved and construction is completed, customers can expect a firey experience that will shock anyone who hasn’t seen it.

  • Yamato offers the whole hibachi experience but not sushi. I used to work there recently. Do more research before you write an article. And anyone who wants to work at Edo please make sure you get paid the full minimum wage ($12 per hour and not $9) during the week of training because you won’t make tips.
