With five locations already operating in Northeast Florida, Grumpy’s Restaurant is preparing to open a sixth, this time at 1803 E West Pkwy on Fleming Island, in the former home of Dicks Wings and Grill.
Grumpy’s is a classic American breakfast, brunch, and lunch brand with generous portions and an emphasis on service. It’s the sort of brand that’s a welcome addition to any neighborhood. And some anticipation is already growing.
“We’re excited. We’re going to have a private room, game area for the kids, a full-service bar, all your favorite breakfast, brunch and lunch specialties,” Grumpy’s President and CEO Daniel DeLeon said in recent coverage by Jacksonville.com.
What Now spoke on Wednesday with Dell Hoard, the franchisee behind both the new location (together with wife Peggy and their son Dell Jr.) and the Grumpy’s in Middleburg.
“We’re in our fifth year in Middleburg, and it’s been great since day 1,” Hoard said.
The Middleburg restaurant has become a success despite a fire that put it out of commission for about year. Thanks to community support and a dependable staff, Hoard says the restaurant was able get back up and running quickly—and it’s been running smoothly ever since.
“With our staff, we don’t really have turnover,” Hoard said. “People stay, and they make the experience great. That’s what makes the place different: our people. It’s like having a second family.”
As the family prepares to expand Grumpy’s footprint in the area, and Hoard says they’re confident in the brand, the food, and, perhaps most importantly, in the team behind it.
“Our biggest strength is our franchisor [Daniel DeLeon]. We had never been in the restaurant business, other than my working in them as a kid. Getting into it, going by the playbook he has established—it made it very simple. He never stops trying to improve the process, and he’s always looking for ways to help make your life easier. I think probably every franchisee would tell you the same thing.”
The opening on Fleming Island is planned for Q2 2026.
