Known to the internet as “Golf Mami,” Alejandra Barnard is breathing new life into amateur golf. A late learner, Barnard started getting serious about golf at age 30 and went from a 40+ handicap to 0 in seven years. Now she is preparing to launch the Golf Proformance Institute, a major golf training facility (and more) in Summerlin early next year.

“The idea came from my personal journey in golf,” Barnard told What Now on Thursday. “I have a chronic health condition that means I struggle with pain and I need things like physical therapy, a chiropractor, sports massage. And there wasn’t anywhere to go that had everything in one place.”

And so the Golf Proformance Institute was conceived. Its facilities will be the ultimate one-stop-shop for golf, featuring 7 golf simulators, a women’s-only pro shop, group classes, yoga, strengthening and conditioning, physical therapy, chiropractic work, sports massage and more.

“There’s nothing like it in Vegas,” Barnard said, contrasting the concept with golf entertainment spots like Topgolf. “Those are places to hit golf balls. You don’t get the recovery, performance, and training sides.”

The Proformance Institute will cater to expert players and beginners alike, Barnard says, but it’s definitely a place for people who are serious about their golf.

“And of course, because it’s founded by a woman, it’s also focused on women and bringing more women into golf.”

Once you’re done working on your game (and your sports massage), the Golf Proformance Institute will also be a good place to relax, featuring a lounge offering beer and wine and small bites like charcuterie boards and prepackaged snacks.

“This is the first location,” said Barnard, “but there will hopefully be more in the future in other states. The goal is to make this one successful and expand from there.”
