Little Tokyo nonprofits Little Tokyo Service Center and Go For Broke National Education Center have submitted their plans for a 228-unit affordable housing project in Downtown Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo neighborhood, according to a planning case opened by the city this month.
The long-planned project would rise on a city-owned parking lot bounded by Judge John Aiso Street to the west, Temple Street to the north, Alameda Street to the east, and a series of buildings to the south that includes the headquarters for the Go For Broke National Education Center, which has the mission of raising awareness for Japanese American World War II veterans.
In March, the city signed off on a key expansion of the nonprofits’ ground lease of the project site.
Plans filed this month call for a fully affordable apartment project with 50 percent of units also designated as permanent supportive housing. Designed by Carde Ten Architecture + Consulting, the community would hold 66 studios, 40 one-bedrooms, 61 two-bedrooms, and 61 three-bedrooms.
The development would also contain community education and cultural space focused on Japanese American World War II veterans and curated by the Go For Broke National Education Center, as well as 30,500 square feet of commercial space and about 2,000 square feet of restaurant space.
Plans also call for about 35,000 square feet of open space including a 6,248-square-foot paseo, 2,686-square-foot artist alley, 1,180-square-foot pocket park, and 4,136-square-foot plaza, among other features.
