Breakfast Republic, a Southern California breakfast and brunch restaurant known for its creative spins on American classics, is getting ready to open a new location in Los Angeles at 5930 E York Blvd.

The company’s new Highland Park location is set to move into the former home of Maximiliano and Macleod on York, according to Los Angeles City Planning Department filings. While an exact opening date has not yet been announced, the restaurant will include a 2,503-square-foot indoor dining area with 76 seats, a 1,245-square-foot rear patio with 60 seats, and a 165-square-foot front sidewalk area with 18 seats. Customers can expect a full line of alcohol for on-site consumption and a menu featuring breakfast classics with unique twists.

Breakfast Republic was founded in 2015 in San Diego by Johan Engman. The first location opened in North Park, followed by Liberty Station and several other spots throughout Southern California. The brand has grown steadily, offering casual breakfast and brunch dining with playful design touches, local craft beer, and dishes such as Oreo Pancakes, Shrimp & Grits, and S’mores French Toast.

The Highland Park site is located on bustling York Blvd, surrounded by established restaurants such as Café de Leche, Hippo, and Highland Park Bowl. The area’s mix of local traffic and community activity makes it a strong candidate for a new Breakfast Republic location. This will be an excellent landing space for the restaurant as it continues its expansion into Los Angeles.

Menu offerings at Breakfast Republic focus on elevated American breakfast dishes, all-day brunch, and boozy beverages. The concept combines classic comfort foods with inventive twists, local craft beers, and a casual, approachable environment.

Owner Johan Engman started in the restaurant industry as a dishwasher before founding Fig Tree Cafe and later launching Breakfast Republic under Rise and Shine Hospitality Group. Engman has expanded the brand across Southern California and received recognition for his entrepreneurial work, including being named San Diego Business Journal’s 2021 Private Large Company CEO of the Year and a 2022 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year finalist.
