Michelin-starred chef Kevin Meehan is preparing to open Koast, a brand-new concept at 6623 Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles.
The renowned chef’s newest restaurant is set to replace Umeda, according to a recent liquor license application. While it’s unclear exactly what Koast will offer, it will be one-of-a-kind, considering Meehan’s other restaurant, Kali, has consistently earned a Michelin star since 2019, affirming his culinary prowess and dedication to excellence. It’s unclear when the new restaurant is expected to open, but it will sit less than a mile from Kali, which is between Hollywood and Larchmont Village.
Kali is co-owned by Drew Langley, who tells What Now LA that he will co-owner Koast. Together, the two bring decades of experience to this new restaurant concept. This is an impressive accomplishment for the Michelin-starred chef, who originated from Long Island. Meehan’s culinary journey commenced at a tender age in a neighborhood fried chicken establishment. He pursued formal culinary education at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island, and further sharpened his skills through apprenticeships, including one at the Michelin-starred L’alban Chambon in Belgium.
In 2000, Meehan moved to Los Angeles and joined the prestigious L’Orangerie restaurant, where he trained under Chef Ludo Lefebvre. He then worked at renowned establishments such as Bastide and Patina, earning accolades, including a coveted Michelin Star. In 2016, Meehan and Langley opened Kali Restaurant, culminating his three-decade-long culinary journey. Among Los Angeles’ top restaurants, Kali showcases Meehan’s refined expertise developed in the city’s most prestigious kitchens.
Editorial Note: A previous version of this article stated that Meehan was pursuing this venture alone. Drew Langley is a co-owner of the new restaurant.
