Pasadena-based Dan Modern Chinese first opened at 146 S. Lake Avenue in late 2018 and has since had a steady rise. This year, the restaurant expanded to Sawtelle with a location at 2049 Sawtelle Boulevard, and there are additional plans to bring more of its signature xiao long bao dumplings elsewhere in the Los Angeles area.

Dan Modern Chinese is expected to take over the former location of the Santa Monica soup stop Ippudo Ramen, located at 1403 2nd Street. Owner James Kim told What Now Los Angeles that this location will open in the neighborhood by September 2020.

The restaurant’s website further confirms that the business will also expand to Playa Vista in 2020 and Manhattan Beach in 2021. Kim said that there are also plans for a location in San Fernando Valley, which should open by spring or summer of next year. He confirmed that the Manhattan Beach location will be in Manhattan Village at 3200 N. Sepulveda Boulevard, but the restauranteur would not confirm the exact address for the Playa Vista neighborhood.

It was also previously announced that there would be a new location in Westwood, but the owner pulled out of those plans.

Along with these expansion plans, there will also be new menu items, including dan dan noodles and boba drinks.
