Maverick’s Flat, a city-landmarked music venue in Leimert Park, is planned to reopen under the same name. It is still unknown when the business will open its doors again, but What Now Los Angeles (WNLA) learned that Botach Management acquired the vacant property at 4225 Crenshaw Boulevard in 2018 for $2.6 million, a drop from the originally asked $5 million in 2015, and recently secured a lease for the 8,330-square-foot space. The new tenant will open a bar/nightclub with the same name. They take over the space on August 21.
Mavericks’ Flat debuted in 1966 with The Temptations as the opening act. With acts thereafter including Marvin Gaye; Parliament Funkadelic; Earth, Wind, and Fire; and the Commodores, the nightclub’s reputation became focused on enlivening the area’s jazz, soul, and R&B music scene. It became a celebrity hangout spot with notables like Marlon Brando and Steve McQueen.
The business’ nickname soon became the “Apollo of the West,” named after the New York theater. In 2000, Maverick’s Flat earned the official designation as a city Historic-Cultural Monument. The business was founded by John Daniels.
Botach Management on multiple occasions did not respond to WNLA’s request for comment.

My wife and I had our first date at Maverick’s Flat on Saturday, October 10, 1970. We are reminded often by a picture taken, which was given to us as a wedding gift 47 years ago. Another fond memory was sitting on the floor, a few feet away from the stage where top personalities performed, especially one of my favorites, the Four Tops.
