Matu Kai, a sister concept of Beverly Hills’ Matu, is ready to open its door in Brentwood at 11777 San Vicente Boulevard, Suite 134.

The new restaurant is the latest from Jerry A. Greenberg, Michael Odell, Ryan Gianola, and Scott Linder, the team who opened Matu in 2021. Now, they are getting ready to open Matu Kai in Spring 2025, offering set multi-course meals that resemble a composed Japanese omakase but are entirely focused on New Zealand-raised wagyu, according to Eater Los Angeles. All Wagyu on the menu comes from First Light Farms, which Greenberg owns.

“At Matū, we’ve spent years exploring different cooking techniques from around the globe that complement our core steak offerings,” according to the announcement. “Matū Kai allows us to expand our creativity while maintaining a focused menu at each restaurant. Our partnership with First Light Farms delivers on a fundamental promise of Matū and Matū Kai: TRUST. Guests can trust the provenance of every single piece of beef; trust they will feel good after eating; trust that the animals were humanely raised; and trust the regenerative farming practices used in New Zealand are helping the earth.”

The five-course tasting menu, priced at $87 per person, begins with a 24-hour bone broth and includes Japanese-style steak tartare, braised beef cheek with celeriac puree, and a 3-ounce center-cut filet with salad. The highlight is a shareable 12-ounce ribeye, or 11-ounce New York strip served with grilled broccolini. Customers can also expect specialized tasting menus, a la carte options, lobster tails, branzino, a shrimp cocktail, and more.

“Kai is, in many ways, Matu’s twin — they share the same DNA — yet just like twins, they are not exactly the same,” Greenberg says in a statement. “At Matu, we have been exploring cooking techniques from around the world that complement our core steak offerings and make up our Matu dinners. The addition of Kai gives us more room to push that creativity while keeping our menu focused at each restaurant.”
