Northern Cafe is expanding to a sixth location in El Segundo, located at 700-A S. Allied Way.

The authentic Chinese cuisine restaurant will move into the former home of Soom Soom, a fresh Mediterranean restaurant, at an unknown date. Co-owners Chuan (Cynthia) Yong and Betty Ren will likely open this new location sometime in 2022. The restaurant has recently filed for a liquor license through the ABC, and Yong wasn’t available for additional comments. The restaurant initially opened up shop on the UCLA campus in Westwood, located at 1064 Gayley Ave, in 2016.

The success of their UCLA campus location led them to expand to Northridge and UC Irvine recently. Now, the micro-chain has five other locations throughout Los Angeles, according to Google (the company’s website hasn’t updated their location listings). This new location will become the furthest south location, situated right below LAX. When the El Segundo location finally opens, they will sit in the same vicinity as California Fish Grill and Veggie Grill, giving residents plenty of options to choose from.

Northern Cafe specializes in dumplings, especially in xiao long bao (soup dumplings). The restaurant also offers several soups, noodle and fried rice plates, house entrees, and small plates such as beef rolls and chive egg pancakes. They also provide several fresh teas, including Thai tea and mango green tea. It’s uncertain if the new location will change the menu, but all other locations share a similar menu.
