RockSugar Southeast Asian Kitchen is no longer open in the Westfield Century City mall, at 10250 Santa Monica Blvd. The restaurant — which is from parent company Cheesecake Factory — went dark on the last day of 2020, a note posted to the doors of the towering RockSugar states. On the restaurant’s website is a similar note, confirming the news.

“As of 12/31/20, we have discontinued operations,” according to the RockSugar website. “We have very much enjoyed being part of the Century City community for the last 12 years, and thank you for allowing us to serve you.”

With its closure, the RockSugar chain is no more. The company did have a location in Chicago which has also permanently closed. The Illinois outpost was the second and only other location for the larger-than-life, pan-Asian eatery, with a menu of dishes inspired by the cuisines of Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Taking its name from the essential ingredient used in Asian cooking, RockSugar Southeast Asian Kitchen was created by restaurateur David Overton and Singapore-raised, New York-trained chef Mohan Ismail.

Ismail is still cooking RockSugar-esque dishes by way of a new eatery called Social Monk, according to the RockSugar website. “We hope you’ll want to continue to enjoy Chef Mohan’s signature cuisine and will visit Social Monk Asian Kitchen, our new fast-casual concept in Westlake Village.”
