The Venice Whaler is set to open The Santa Monica Whaler, a sister restaurant in Santa Monica, located at 101 Broadway.

The new restaurant, expected to open in late summer 2021, will replace Ma’Kai Restaurant and Lounge, co-owned and operated by The Venice Whaler’s owner Michael Dobson. The Venice Whaler, located at 10 Washington Blvd., features a delicious seafood menu from executive chef Nick Liberato, host of Netflix’s Restaurants on the Edge. The new restaurant, like the original, will be situated right on the beach for an excellent waterside dining experience.

“We’ve been an escape from reality, a place for celebration, and a favorite watering hole to numerous artists including the Doors, Beatles, and Beach Boys,” reads the Venice Whaler website. “So whether it’s our magical sunsets, our killer margaritas, or our world-famous fish tacos that brought you in, we invite you to stay awhile and join us in the same toast that we’ve been raising since 1944.”

The Santa Monica Whaler is expected to offer the same menu items as its original location, including the Whaler Burger, which was voted Top 10 hottest burgers in Los Angeles by Eater in 2017. The original restaurant also offers a vibrant brunch and drink menu, with some highlights including the surfer’s burrito, a muscle beach scramble, and the Whaler’s Famous Margarita.
