Bäco Mercat’s DTLA space won’t sit dark long. Tulsi Indian Eatery later this year is set to replace the recently-shuttered restaurant, at 408 S. Main St. Bäco Mercat closed its doors in August with the owners citing the financial hardship brought on by the novel coronavirus as the culprit.
While an opening timeline for Tulsi Indian Eatery is unclear, signage announcing the incoming restaurant recently went up at the space and a website indicates a “winter 2020” opening. That timeline might not be for the DTLA outpost, however. Tulsi is launching in Los Angeles with multiple locations at once including in Northridge as shown in the above rendering.
Sagar Ghosh is Tulsi Indian Eatery’s corporate chef, per LinkedIn. Ghosh’s resume includes two long stints with Carnival Cruise Line and Hilton Worldwide. There isn’t a menu available to the public quite yet, but Gosh won’t be serving “overspiced, boring curries and hard flatbreads,” the website states.
Tulsi Indian Eatery will have three distinct elements: Tulsi Quick Service, Tulsi Thali Room, and Tulsi Lassi Bar. Tulsi Quick Service will be a fast-casual component offering a “wide variety of comforting and nourishing Indian treats in a brand new, casual dining room.” The Tulsi Thali Room is for more of a sit-down-and-order dining experience and the Tulsi Lassi Bar will serve customizable lassi (yogurt shake).
