Tare, a plastic and package-free grocery store on a “mission to make sustainability the new standard,” will open soon in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.
Tare will be situated in a 2,800-square-foot space formerly occupied by American TV Service, at 5046 York Blvd.
The grocery store’s name comes from tare weight or unladen weight, which is the weight of an empty container, used to calculate the weight of goods being carried in said container.
As customers will most likely shop using their own glass containers, it will be important to first calculate the tare weight before adding produce, nuts, etc., as to only pay for the weight of the product.
Husband and wife Joseph and Lauren Macrino are the duo opening Tare.
“Even if we’re trying to reduce and reuse, the current grocery landscape has made it so difficult to avoid unnecessary, single-use packaging,” an advert seeking grocery associates for Tare explains.
“We want to change that. We want to reinvent the way people think about grocery shopping. Our ultimate goal at Tare is to show how simple it is to live a plastic-free lifestyle. We are here to create a clean, welcoming and effortless experience through delicious food, honest connections and shared appreciation of our planet.”
An opening is likely in mid-February as the buildout on the space wraps.
